Leadership and School Improvement

At least three leadership-related elements provoke and sustain ongoing school improvement.
Picture
  1. A change of leadership is often a critical element in igniting school improvement.  While some view a school leader’s longevity as an indisputable factor in school success, new leaders often bring the insight, focus, and energy required to identify areas of needed improvement and take steps toward greater effectiveness.  Increasingly, we are encountering the next generation of leaders emerging through promotion within their schools. They are uniquely prepared to leverage their knowledge of the school and alignment with its purpose and culture, to move it forward in a positive trajectory.
  2. While it may seem inconsistent with the prior point, continuity in effective leadership can also greatly impact a school’s quest for ongoing improvement.  It is common to encounter international school heads who arrive, impose change, and then move on to their next conquest.  Sometimes, they produce quick improvement “wins.”  However, the head willing to put in the time and build a culture of improvement in student learning and organizational performance is the more likely hero in school improvement.
  3. Finally, current school leaders investing in the next generation of school leaders is a huge factor in long-term continuity in school improvement.  Stability in a school’s quest for improvement can be attained through the intentional development of professionals who are identified with potential for impact and/or motivated by opportunities to step up as leaders in their schools.
The GLOBAL Group is preparing to launch a program in which experienced school leaders will provide sustained mentoring and coaching for new and aspiring school leaders in the international schools where they serve, supporting current school leaders and boards in developing the next generation of school leaders.
